Firm recalls John Morrell sausages for food risk

Lykes Meat Group voluntarily recalled 35,830 lbs (16,300 kgs) of Polish sausage sold under the John Morrell brand that may have been under-processed, a U.S. food safety agency said Tuesday.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said consumers face the risk of foodborne illness when meats are not processed properly. FSIS said it had no reports of illnesses from the recall. Lykes Meat, based in Plant City, Florida, discovered the problem and began the recall on Monday.
The 14-ounce packages of sausage were produced on June 11 and sent to retail stores in Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New York and Ohio with a label saying “JOHN MORRELL Polish Sausage, made with Chicken, Pork, Beef.”
All of the recalled packages carry a code of “162509A” or “162509B,” a sell-by date of “08 2005” and the establishment number “EST. 8” on the outside of the package.
FSIS also said A.J. Cetak’s Meat Market, of Ord, Nebraska, recalled 3,400 lbs (1,550 kg) of pork sausage due to an undeclared allergen. The label says bread is an ingredient but does not state that wheat flour, a potential known allergen, was used.
Recalled were 12-ounce to 16-ounce clear vacuum plastic packages of “CETAK’S Family Tradition for four generations JATERNICE (Ring Pudding Sausage) Fully Cooked Natural Casing” with “EST. 21562” inside the Agriculture Department inspection seal.
Cetak’s produced the sausages from Jan. 9, 2003, to Aug. 22. They were sold in retail stores in Nebraska and on the Internet.
