What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

A child with a congenital lack of intrinsic factor usually develops normally during the first 6 to 12 months of life. After this time, symptoms slowly begin and may include:

  • irritability
  • weakness
  • developmental delays, in which the child progresses more slowly than usual in motor skills, language, or thinking
  • diarrhea
  • pale skin, or pallor
  • decreased appetite
