Ropinirole (By Mouth)

Ropinirole (roe-PIN-i-role)

Treats symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors, stiffness, and slow movement.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to ropinirole.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use and how often.
  • You may take the tablets with or without food. If the medicine upsets your stomach, try taking it with food.

If a dose is missed:

  • Use the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using other medicine that could make you sleepy such as sleeping pills, tranquilizers, some cold and allergy medicines, narcotic pain killers, or muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. You may get too drowsy or sedated if you drink alcohol or use medicines that cause drowsiness with ropinirole.
  • Tell your doctor if you are using omeprazole, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, mexiletine, or fluvoxamine or if you smoke tobacco. Tell your doctor if you start or stop using estrogens or birth control pills while being treated with this medicine.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Ropinirole may make you dizzy or sleepy, especially when you first start using the medicine or if your dose is increased. Avoid driving or using machinery until you know how the medicine will affect you.
  • Dizziness may be worse if you get up too fast after sitting or lying down. Getting up slowly from a sitting or lying position may help.
  • Check with your doctor before using this medicine if you have heart, liver, or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine may cause hallucinations (seeing or hearing something that does not exist). Older adults using this medicine are more likely to have hallucinations. If you have questions or concerns about this, talk with your doctor.
  • Do not suddenly stop using ropinirole unless you have first talked with your doctor. To prevent side effects, you may need to use smaller and smaller doses before completely stopping the medicine.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Increased loss of muscle control
  • Fainting
  • Very slow heartbeat (about 50 heartbeats a minute or less)
  • Feeling short of breath, swelling in your feet or lower legs

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Feeling dizzy, sleepy, or tired
  • Hallucinations, confusion
  • Nausea, indigestion, vomiting
  • Increased sweating
  • Changes in vision
  • Headache
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
