Sodium Citrate (By Mouth)

Sodium Citrate (SOE-dee-um SIT-rate)

Treats and prevents kidney stones by lowering the amount of acid in urine. May also be used to treat metabolic acidosis, which sometimes occurs in patients with kidney problems.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to sodium citrate, if you are on a low-salt diet, or if you have severe kidney disease.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet, Liquid

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often. You should not use more of this medicine than your doctor ordered.
  • Take this medicine within 30 minutes after a meal or bedtime snack.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with an 8-ounce glass of water.
  • Drink at least one 8-ounce glass of water every hour while you are taking this medicine, or follow your doctor's instructions about fluid intake.
  • Measure your oral liquid dose carefully using a measuring spoon or medicine cup.
  • Pour the correct dose of the oral liquid medicine into a small glass of water. Drink all of this mixture and then drink another glass of water if desired.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take your medicine as soon possible if you remember within 2 hours of when your dose was due.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Store the tablets at room temperature in a closed container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Store the oral liquid at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Do not eat salty foods or use salt substitutes or extra table salt while you are taking this medicine.
  • If your medicine also contains potassium citrate (Citrolith®), you should not use salt substitutes unless your doctor has told you to.
  • You should not use antacids with this medicine without first checking with your doctor.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking any type of diuretic, heart medicine, or medicine for pain.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Before taking this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you have Addison's disease (underactive adrenal glands), diabetes, heart or kidney disease, high blood pressure, hypocalcemia (low calcium in the blood), intestinal blockage, or stomach problems.
  • While you are taking this medicine, your doctor may want to check your blood at regular intervals. Keep all appointments.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Black, tarry stools
  • Confusion or racing thoughts
  • Seizures
  • Severe diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Trouble breathing

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Loose stools
  • Mild stomach pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
