What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Many people have no symptoms of mitral regurgitation. Or a person may experience:

  • shortness of breath
  • tiredness or fatigue
  • palpitations, a series of rapid heart beats
  • trouble breathing
  • A physical exam by a healthcare provider can reveal:

  • an irregular pulse
  • abnormal movements of the chest wall during breathing
  • abnormal heart sounds and heart murmurs
