Cetirizine (By Mouth)

Cetirizine (se-TI-ra-zeen)

Treats hay fever and allergy symptoms, hives, and itching. Belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines.

There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to cetirizine or hydroxyzine (some brand names of hydroxyzine are Atarax® and Vistaril®).

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet, Liquid

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often. Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered.
  • You may take this medicine with or without food.
  • Carefully measure your oral liquid dose using a measuring spoon or medicine cup.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Store the medicine at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze the oral liquid.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking other medicines that might make you sleepy such as cold or allergy medicines, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or strong pain killers.
  • Tell your doctor if you also take theophylline.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Check with your doctor before taking cetirizine if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Talk with your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Cetirizine may make you sleepy. Be careful if you are driving or using machinery.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
