Tizanidine (By Mouth)

Tizanidine (tye-ZAN-i-deen)

Relaxes certain muscles and relieves muscle spasms or tightness caused by multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and other medical problems.

There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to tizanidine.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to take and how often.
  • You may be taking this medicine to get better results from treatment such as physical therapy. Be sure to take the medicine at the times your doctor tells you to. You should not use the medicine more often or in larger doses than your doctor ordered.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Keep the tablets in a tightly closed container at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using birth control pills or medicine to lower blood pressure.
  • Drinking alcohol while using tizanidine may cause increased drowsiness.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using other medicines that can make you sleepy, such as cold or allergy medicine, tranquilizers, other muscle relaxers, sleeping pills, or narcotic pain killers.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Check with your doctor before using tizanidine if you have liver or kidney disease.
  • This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Be careful if you are driving or using machinery.
  • Dizziness may be worse if you get up too quickly from a sitting or lying position. Getting up slowly after you have been sitting or lying down may help decrease dizziness.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • The long-term effects of this medicine are not known. Report any changes in your health to your doctor.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Stomach pain with nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
  • Dark or amber-colored urine
  • Hallucinations
  • Fainting

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Feeling dizzy, drowsy, or tired
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Nervousness
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
