What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

High total and LDL cholesterol levels cause no symptoms. When the cholesterol builds up in the body, the person may start having symptoms. For example, atherosclerosis of the arteries that supply the heart causes coronary artery disease. The individual may have chest pain and shortness of breath.
