What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Some individuals with mitral stenosis have no symptoms at all. However, this condition may cause:

  • shortness of breath
  • cough, which may rarely produce phlegm containing blood
  • chest pain
  • palpitations, or an abnormal awareness of the heartbeat
  • lung congestion with fluid, known as pulmonary edema
  • congestive heart failure, which usually occurs with severe forms of this condition or after many years of having it
  • irregular heartbeats, or arrhythmias
