Patent Ductus Arteriosus

How is the condition diagnosed?

Tests used to diagnose patent ductus arteriosus include:

  • electrocardiogram, or ECG
  • echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart and its major blood vessels
  • chest X-rays
  • cardiac catheterization, a special X-ray of the heart made using a contrast media
  • These tests show the size of the heart and the amount of blood flowing through the duct.
