What are the signs and symptoms of the infection?

There may not be any symptoms in the early stages of PID. As the infection spreads and grows, however, the symptoms may include:

  • back pain that spreads down the legs
  • dyspareunia, or pain with intercourse
  • pressure in the pelvic area
  • flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, backache, or vomiting
  • heavy, foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • irregular or heavy menstrual cycles
  • pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen
