How is the condition diagnosed?
Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy begins with a medical history and physical exam. The healthcare provider may detect muscle weakness and decreased sensation. The provider may order tests, including the following:
blood tests to look for underlying diseases
electromyography, or EMG, which measures the electrical activity of the involved muscles
nerve conduction velocity studies, or NCV, which measure the nerve's ability to carry messages
X-rays to look for underlying conditions
