Knowing The Signs Of Depression
|
For most people, figuring out the difference between being moody and being depressed is difficult.
However, knowing the difference could affect your health.
The term “depression” is used often. Most of us feel down once in awhile, but when is it something more serious?
Dr. Lisa Slimmer of Unity Health said, “The biggest thing is, it creates significant dysfunction in your life [if it lasts] two weeks or more….then it’s a medical illness that needs to be treated.”
Clinical depression is a real illness where the chemicals in the brain are not working correctly and it just can be just as damaging as heart disease or diabetes.
Slimmer said more people are undiagnosed than misdiagnosed.
If you are concerned about a loved one suffering from depression, here are some things to watch out for: a lack of interest, isolation from friends and family, not going out of the house, having difficulty sleeping and eating, and a generalized sort of sadness.
Several free screening for depression will be taking place on Thursday, October 6 as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
One screening runs from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Park Ridge Mental Health Center, 100 Pine Wild Drive.
