Weighing in on obesity : Alaina’s Story
|
Alaina Lopez is a healthy, confident 6th grader. But a year-and-a half ago, it was a different story.
Alaina’s mother, Carrie, remembers a visit to the pediatrician’s office when Alaina shared what some students were saying about her.
“Alaina was having some issues at school with kids calling her fat.”
Alaina’s pediatrician referred her to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s weight management clinic.
Dr. Nicole Swain is among a team of health professionals who coach kids like Alaina on the right foods to eat, exercise and healthy choices.
“We’re not looking to make everyone thin. We’re looking to make everyone healthy on the inside and outside,” said Swain.
Alaina committed to the 16 week program. In time her body mass index and her insulin level dropped and her good cholesterol soared.
For Alaina, the small choices are amounting to a life time of change.
10News is launching a month-long series, Weighing in on Obesity. We will continue to follow Alaina’s journey throughout May on 10News Nightbeat.
