Decaffeinated coffee may cause an increase in harmful LDL cholesterol

Decaffeinated—not caffeinated—coffee may cause an increase in harmful LDL cholesterol by increasing a specific type of blood fat linked to the metabolic syndrome, hints a new study presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2005.

The Coffee and Lipoprotein Metabolism (CALM) study included 187 people, randomized to three groups: one that drank three to six cups of caffeinated coffee a day; another that drank three to six cups of decaffeinated coffee a day; and a third, the control group, that drank no coffee.

Most airlines agree to regular water monitoring

Most U.S. airlines have agreed to regularly monitor water on their planes after some samples taken from commercial aircraft last year were not safe to drink, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday.

It said 11 major airlines and 13 smaller ones reached agreement with the agency to routinely analyze on-board water supplies for bacteria and other contaminants and disinfect aircraft water systems serving galleys and bathrooms.

Eating fish regularly delays dementia - study

Eating fish at least once a week slows the effects of aging on the brain, while obesity at midlife doubles the risk of dementia, a pair of studies concluded on Monday.

Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish have been shown to boost brain functioning as well as cut the risk of stroke, and eating fish regularly appears to protect the brain as people age, the six-year study of Chicago residents said.

Dark chocolate helps diarrhea

By Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland, A new study conducted by researchers at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is the first to discover that a chemical in cocoa beans can limit the development of fluids that cause diarrhea. Cocoa beans contain a large amount of chemicals called flavonoids. Scientists believe that these flavonoids can be used to create natural supplements to ease diarrhea symptoms. Dark chocolate contains high concentrations of cocoa and may offer mild relief.

The study, published in the October issue of The Journal of Nutrition, found that cocoa flavonoids can bind to and inhibit a protein in the intestines called CFTR, which regulates fluid secretion in the small intestines.

UK announces plans to ban school junk food

Junk food high in fat, salt or sugar is to be banned in schools across England within a year, Education Secretary Ruth Kelly announced on Wednesday after a high profile campaign by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Kelly, speaking to the BBC and Sky News, said she would give details of the ban during her speech at the Labour Party conference in Brighton.

Green tea component may fight Alzheimer’s: study

An ingredient in green tea that researchers think might fight cancer may also protect the brain from the memory-destroying Alzheimer’s disease, a study released on Tuesday said.

Scientists injected mice with an antioxidant from green tea called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and said it decreased production of beta-amyloid, a protein that forms the plaques that clog the brains of Alzheimer’s victims.

California to ban soda in high schools

California high schools will ban carbonated soda in legislation approved by the state assembly on Thursday as part of an effort to combat teen Obesity.

The bill allows milk, drinks with at least 50 percent fruit or vegetable juice and water without sweetener. The ban will be phased in starting in 2007 and take full effect in 2009.

S. Korea says it found carcinogens in Chinese fish

South Korea officials said on Wednesday they were stepping up inspections of imported Chinese freshwater fish after finding cancer-causing chemicals in some fish sent from the country.

The Korea Food & Drug Administration (KFDA) said in a statement released on Tuesday it had found the carcinogens malachite green and leucomalachite in some imported Chinese carp available at a local wholesale market.

Firm recalls John Morrell sausages for food risk

Lykes Meat Group voluntarily recalled 35,830 lbs (16,300 kgs) of Polish sausage sold under the John Morrell brand that may have been under-processed, a U.S. food safety agency said Tuesday.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said consumers face the risk of foodborne illness when meats are not processed properly. FSIS said it had no reports of illnesses from the recall. Lykes Meat, based in Plant City, Florida, discovered the problem and began the recall on Monday.

EU authorizes GMO maize type by legal rubberstamp

The European Union authorized imports of a genetically modified (GMO) maize on Monday, the third GMO product to win approval since the EU ended its unofficial biotech ban last year, officials said.

The maize, known as MON 863, is engineered by U.S. biotech giant Monsanto to resist the corn rootworm insect.
