Baby born to brain dead American woman dies

A baby girl born last month to a brain dead Virginia woman died early on Monday following surgery, according to a statement on a family Web site.
“With great sadness, we are asking for your prayers for the repose of the soul of 5-week-old baby Susan Ann Torres. She passed away last night after surgery for a perforated intestine,” the statement said.
The Washington Post, citing hospital officials and the baby’s uncle, Justin Torres, said she contracted a disease that can afflict premature infants, which led to an infection and a perforated intestine.
The baby, named for her mother, was delivered by Caesarean section on August 2 to a brain dead woman who was kept on life support for almost three months at a Virginia hospital.
The mother, Susan Torres, who was diagnosed with brain cancer, collapsed after a Stroke on May 7 and never recovered.
Doctors at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington gave the mother no chance of survival, but her family decided to keep her on life support to allow time for the fetus to develop.
The baby weighed one pound and 13 ounces (0.8 kg) at birth and there were no complications during delivery, a family statement said at the time.
The Post said the child’s condition suddenly and rapidly deteriorated over the weekend.
Doctors at Children’s Hospital in Washington tried to stabilize her medically and performed two emergency surgeries but were unable to save her, the Post said.
A hospital spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
