Tenuate plus diet causes 17-25 lbs weight loss after six months

Weight LossSep 20, 05

Tenuate (diethylpropion) given every day causes greater weight loss than diet alone, but giving it intermittently every other month is not according to paper on diet drugs by Dr. Lisa L. Ioannides-Demos from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Study #1 weight loss after six months: 17.2 lbs vs 4.2 lbs

One study found that 75 mg of Tenuate (diethylpropion) in combination with a diet caused an average weight loss of 17.2 pounds in six months compared to 4.2 pounds for those given a placebo, however, the difference was not statistically significant.

Study #2 weight loss after six months: 25.5 lbs vs 5.5 lbs

A second study, a small study of 20 patients, found that those given 75 mg of Tenuate (diethylpropion) in combination with a diet lost an average of 25.5 pounds in six months compared to 5.5 pounds for those given a placebo.

Study #3 weight loss after six months: 24.9 lbs with daily Tenuate vs 14.5 lbs with intermittent Tenuate

A third study, that involved 200 patients, found that giving 75 mg of Tenuate (diethylpropion) every day in combination with a diet caused an average weight loss of 24.9 pounds in six months, whereas patients given Tenuate (diethylpropion) intermittently every other month lost an average of only 14.5 pounds.

Study #4: Intermittent Tenuate no more effective than placebo

A fourth study, lasting one year, found that weight loss was no greater in patients given 75 mg of Tenuate (diethylpropion) intermittently every other month in combination with a low carbohydrate diet compared to those given a placebo plus the diet.

Study #4, greater weight loss with placebo after 6 months: 15.4 lbs vs 19.1 lbs

The average weight loss after six months was 15.4 pounds for those given Tenuate (diethylpropion) intermittently compared to 19.1 pounds for those given the placebo.

Study #4, greater weight loss with placebo after one year: 19.6 lbs vs 23.1 lbs

After one year the average weight was 19.6 pounds for the intermittent Tenuate (diethylpropion) group compared to 23.1 pounds.

Comment: Intermittent phentermine may be effective, but not intermittent Tenuate

Another study suggested that giving phentermine every other month might be as effective as giving it every day, however, this study suggests that giving Tenuate (diethylpropion) every other month is not nearly as effective as giving it every day.
